We have a real chance to change the old guard in the town at all three layers of local government. I have been asked to stand for Somerset County Council to allow Shepton to have a clear voice in Taunton. This is an opportunity to make a tangible difference to how Shepton will be perceived at County Hall. Instead of them telling us what they want of us, I’m standing to make sure that we will be telling them what we want from them.
At all three levels of local government, we need fresh ideas and mix of ages, backgrounds and talents. The Lib Dem team offers a wide spectrum of skills and opinions – including those with a depth of experience of local politics and those with extensive knowledge of business and those with impeccable sustainable green credentials.
Alongside them on the Town Council, truly independent candidates who can bring passion, commitment and their own life experiences to bear on the town’s many challenging issues and threats can also make an important difference.
What we need least of all, is more of the same old Tories telling us how great they have been in the past, and how much money they have lavished on Shepton, while all of us who live here can see that, whether their claims have veracity or not, it hasn’t worked.
Shepton has many pressing issues – from threats to build over a thousand dense-packed homes on the Shepton Show site, to sorting out the contradictions of car park charges that strangle the High Street, to exposing the madness of charging us twice over for using recycling centres (once on our Council Tax and again at the gate), or to cutting the town off at night and weekends by axing bus services to and from Wells and Frome.
We have a chance to expose the false promises and weaknesses of those currently in power in Shepton, Mendip and Somerset.1 Comment
